The HP TouchPad Tablet is getting ready to hit the shelves, but should you buy one?
If you are like our staff, many of you already have desktops, laptops, netbooks and Smart Phones. Do you need a tablet? What will you use it for?
The HP TouchPad will allow you to use Flash, so browsing most websites won?t be a problem. There will be plenty of apps and games to play. You can have access to email and calendars, sync with Microsoft Exchange and so on and so forth.
Most of these things are pretty common (minus Flash on the iPad and iPad 2).
So what are some practical uses or reasons to buy this tablet?
Well for one ? they?re just cool. Being able to interact anywhere online with a lightweight, all touchscreen, sleek looking device is pretty cool. The batteries last forever, and you can bring them anywhere with you.
Now other than being just cool, what are they for?
If you travel for business, or frequently give presentations ? the HP TouchPad will provide you some comfort, and will be an impressive conversation piece for your prospective clients. Maybe you line of work could benefit if you can perform quotes in the field? What if you could meet with a client, listen to their requirements, and generate and email a proposal right from your tablet, without ever leaving the conference room? Maybe you could accept a digital signature and secure the deal right then and there.
Most people that buy tablets just use them to get online, check email and play a few games. I?d say that the HP TouchPad is going to be worth the $499.00 investment just to do that.
What about your cell phone? Are you going to be willing to make the switch to a new WebOS cell phone like the HP Veer or Pre3? If you do that, at a minimum you can share web browsing sessions between the devices, which is a nice feature. However, will the current lack of developer application support prevent you from making the switch early on?
We feel that HP has the money and market share to make their product a success from day 1. WebOS and Palm already had a stable and loyal fan base ? so HP will have to focus on generating sales in the regular consumer marketplace. Beats Audio and Dr. Dre music videos are certainly a start, but that won?t be the end of it.
