How many of you have a cat or cats? Notice, I didn?t ask how many own a cat. One thing I have learned in life is that no one owns a cat; cats own humans.
No matter how many people are in a family, once a cat moves in, it usually will select one person as its pet. Very seldom will a cat share its companionship with more than one person.
There are three cats in our house. The oldest is ?Blackie.? Second in line is ?Buddy? and last, but not least, is ?Mischief.? All three have adopted me, with the possible exception of ?Mischief? who will sometimes share her companionship with Peggy.
All three were kittens when they adopted me and took up residence in the house. Most of the time, at least two of the three are nearby. If I am working at the computer, sometimes ?Buddy? will lie down on the printer while ?Blackie? is on my left hand near the keyboard. Then there are other times that ?Buddy? will lie near my right hand, most of the time on top of the mouse.
?Mischief? with her personal lifestyle will rest anywhere she falls down, whether on a table, chair, or in the middle of the floor.
At night, we share the bed.
They have a bad habit though. Around 5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m, they make their move on me. One taps me on the shoulder, one licks me in the face and one pulls the covers. This is their way of telling me they are ready for canned cat food breakfast.
I get up and start to stagger through the house. It looks like a parade with the three cats leading the way to the pantry where I keep their canned food.
Yes, they have me well trained.
The history of cats as pets goes back as much as 4,000 years ago with their domestication of by the Ancient Egyptians.
They used the cats to control vermin and other pests that would invade the stores of food. In Egypt, cats were so revered that death was the penalty for those who killed cats.
The domestication of cats slowly moved out of Egypt into other countries including those of Europe, Turkey, Iran, China, and India.
Cats were also among the early settlers to New World.
There are 36 recognized breeds of pedigree cats with the Siamese being the most popular.
As for how long a cat can live, a lot depends on care, nutrition, and regular medical care. A cat kept indoors can live as long as 21 years or more. The average is 12 to 15 years. My friend Debbie Pilcher had a cat that lived 17 years. My oldest cat is around 12 years old.
Outside cats average life is about 3 to 5 years.
There are a large number of superstitions and folklore surrounding cats.
Probably the most well-known superstition is that black cats cause bad luck. This idea goes back to the middle ages in Europe when a lot of people of that time believed cats were witches incarnate, thus the reason we still see black cats and witches links, particularly during Halloween.
The type of luck associated with a black cat depends on the country. For example, in Asia and the U.K, a black cat is considered lucky.
In North America, some believe it is bad luck to have a black cat cross your path but a white cat is good luck.
Since all three of my cats are black, that might explains things that happen in my life.
There is a myriad of facts concerning cats, some proven.
Some facts about include that they can be good for a persons health and also can decrease high blood pressure and some other illnesses.
Stroking a cat and help relieve stress. And I know from experience that there is nothing more relaxing than listening to a purring cat.
One of the old sayings I remember was the term ?cat nap.? On the average, a cat will sleep for 16 hours a day.
Cats have super hearing ability as well as the ability to see in the dark.
Cats are surrounded by many superstitions.
They are supposed to be able to predict weather. If a cat continually looks out the window, rain is on the way. And cats sleeping with its four paws tucked under means bad weather coming.
Sailors used cats to predict upcoming voyages. Loudly mewing cats meant that it would be a difficult voyage. A playful cat meant a good voyage with gusty winds.
Regardless of the stories and superstitions regarding cats, excluding fish, they are the most popular of all pets. Around 63 percent of American households have pets. The cat is ranked number 1 with an estimated 93.6 million pet cats with dogs rated number 2 with 77.5 million.
And that?s the cat?s meow!
