Wellness Worksite designation achieved by 12 state organizations

At a recent meeting, Doug Porter (center, back row), Director of the Health Care Authority, recognized Wellness Coordinators from state agencies and institutions of higher education?that have participated in the Washington Wellness Worksite Program over the past four years.

Earning their first W3 designation were the Health Care Authority, Departments of Corrections (Headquarters),?Information Service, Personnel, Retirement Systems, Transportation, and Western Washington University.?Designees?awarded their second W3 designation for improvements in employee health and productivity programs?included the Attorney General?s Office, the Department of Health, the Economic Services Administration in?the Department of Social and Health Services, the Employment Security Department and the Higher Education?Coordination Board.

In order to achieve designation, the organizations had to demonstrate a healthy work culture and measurable?achievement in improving employee health over a period of 18 months. The application required rigorous self-study and?documentation.?Among the Health Care Authority achievements were regular fitness classes in kickboxing, Zumba, yoga and aerobics.?Staff also organized a Weight Watchers chapter, participated in health fairs, organized distribution of organic farm?produce and participated in numerous healthy lifestyle programs, including nutrition and wellness presentations to staff.

The Washington Wellness Worksite designation is valid from July 2011 through December 2012, and state organizations?may publicize their designation in recruitment and retention materials, and in promoting their wellness programs.?The pilot programs that established the foundation of the designation program were funded by Senate Bill 5930 from?July 2007-June 2011.
