E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Blu-ray trailer and box art pop up online (video)

Ever since Universal announced during CES 2012 that it would deliver many of its classic films on Blu-ray this year as part of a centennial celebration, we've been keeping a careful eye out for news regarding Steven Spielberg's classic E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. While we still don't know the release date, price or if it will contain the changes made in the 2002 edition of the flick, Universal posted a trailer for the Blu-ray (embedded after the break, note that at 0:25 seconds the FBI agents are holding guns, so it appears to be the original) that confirmed a digital remastering from the 35MM film, 7.1 surround sound and "hours of bonus features". Additionally, forum posters on Blu-ray.com have noticed this (probably not final) box art appearing on Amazon UK recently. After waiting for word since a new distribution deal brought the flick back to Universal in 2008, a few months of silence hasn't broken us, but hopefully more details appear soon. The best guess still sees the 30th Anniversary release hitting store shelves in time for the holidays (likely after Jaws, which is scheduled for release August 14th), when we can relive our childhoods in proper 1080p HD at last.

Sic Transit Venus

One brisk wintry day in 1639, a young man named Jeremiah Horrocks ? barely 20 ? set up a telescope in his quarters near Preston, England and focused an indirect image of the sun onto a small card. Lack of finances had cut short his brief academic career at Cambridge, despite his intelligence, but he still had a passion for the stars, bolstered by reading the works of Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe.

Kepler?s writings were the reason for Horrocks? homemade experiment. In 1627, Kepler was the first scientist to predict a transit of Venus ? a very rare astronomical event during which the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, a black dot obscuring part of of the solar disk. It?s similar to a solar eclipse by the moon ? we witnessed an annular eclipse just last week! ? except transits of Venus occur every 243 years. Well, it?s a bit more complicated than that, because they usually happen in pairs: the pattern is eight years, 105.5 years, eight years, and 120.5 years.

The good news is, this rare event is happening again next month! And it will be visible in much of the United States! On June 5th, weather permitting, we?ll be able to gaze upon this amazing phenomenon and we won?t even need a telescope, since Venus is large enough to view with the naked eye. But you will need to take proper precautions to avoid permanent eye damage or blindness, just as you do during an eclipse. Ideally, you should travel to Hawaii, or Alaska, or the central Pacific islands for optimal viewing. Or you can watch online, since NASA Television will air a live program tracking the event, starting at 5:30 p.m. EDT.

Anyway, back in the 17th century, Kepler predicted there would be a transit of Venus in 1631, but it was not visible in much of Europe.

Kepler thought the next transit wouldn?t be until 1761, predicting a near miss in 1639. But Horrocks found an error in the great astronomer?s calculation and realized there would be a second transit, instead of a near miss, in 1639. Horrocks, at least, was ready with his little experimental set-up.

At first it seemed like the weather wouldn?t cooperate: the day was cloudy, obscuring the sun?s light. Finally, around 3:15 pm ? 30 minutes or so before sunset ? the clouds parted and Horrocks was able to record the very first observation of a transit of Venus, a small black shadow moving across the surface of the sun.

He used that data to make a solid estimate of the size of Venus, and the distance between the Earth and the Sun. The latter he pegged at 59.4 million miles, whereas the actual distance is 93 million miles (149.6 million kilometers), but it was certainly a more accurate measurement that others made up to them.

Horrocks died suddenly at age 22, prompting his fellow astronomer and mentor William Crabtree, who had been very impressed with the young man?s abilities, to exclaim, ?What an incalculable loss!? His observations weren?t published until 1661.

So, okay, it?s a rare occurrence, but why was it such a big deal? In 1716, Edmund Halley realized one could use transit of Venus to determine the distances between the six known planets at the time. (Uranus and Neptune had not yet been discovered, nor Pluto, although poor Pluto?s status remains a topic of heated debate).

If one could carefully record the start and end of Venus? passage across the face of the sun from widely separated geographic points on Earth, Halley figured, then it should be possible to determine the distance to Venus and the sun, using the distance between those two points on Earth as a baseline for triangulation. And once you knew that, it should also be possible to figure out the scale of the entire solar system.

Halley didn?t live to see the next transit of Venus, but his work ensured everyone had plenty of time to prepare. The weather didn?t cooperate for the Venus transit in 1761, and the data collected were useless, so astronomers pinned their hopes on the next transit in 1769.

Several expeditions were planned, all around the globe, to ensure there were multiple measurements from widely separated geographic points, as Halley recommended. The most famous was the one led by Captain James Cook. His ship, Endeavor, set sail on August 12, 1768, with a crew that included a young naturalist named Joseph Banks and an astronomer, Charles Green. Their mission: to reach the distant island of Tahiti in time to build a makeshift observatory and witness the transit of Venus in June 1769.

It wasn?t the easiest of journeys, although the abundance of Vitamin-C-rich malt wart and sauerkraut Cook had on board at least protected the men from scurvy. (If the finicky crew didn?t eat it, they were whipped. Parents, we do not recommend this approach with your children.) It took eight months, and he lost five men during a storm on Cape Hope, plus one crewman threw himself overboard in despair ? maybe he was really, really tired of sauerkraut and whippings ? but otherwise the ship arrived with most of its crew intact and in good health.

Having traveled all that way, through so much hardship, you?d think that Cook and his crew might have focused on the task at hand when the day of the transit arrived. But they were in Tahiti, which Banks declared ?the truest picture of arcadia (idyllic and peaceful.?

The day kicked off with a breakfast meeting with Tarroa, the island king, his sister, and ?three handsome women.? The king and his entourage duly joined Cook and his men to see ?the planet upon the sun,? but in total Banks? journal entry for June 3, 1769, contains less than 100 words about this spectacular event.

Fortunately, Cook was in a more verbose mood:

?This day prov?d as favourable to our purpose as we could wish, not a Clowd was to be seen? and the Air was perfectly clear, so that we had every advantage we could desire in Observing the whole of the passage of the planet Venus over the Suns disk: we very distinctly saw an Atmosphere or dusky shade round the body of the Planet which very much disturbed the times of the contacts particularly the two internal ones.?

That ?dusky shade? was believed to be the result of? sunlight filtering through the Venusian atmosphere. It?s actually more of an optical effect caused by the smearing of the image of Venus ? usually because of turbulence in the Earth?s atmosphere, or imperfections in one?s instrument.

It?s similar to what happens when you hold your thumb and index finger in front of one eye, then gradually bring the tips together. Just before the tips meet, you should see a shadowy bridge appear. And it was enough to hamper the measurements of Cook and his astronomer, Charles Green, because it made the edge of the disk all fuzzy. It was tough to figure out exactly when the transit began and ended. Their measurements were off by about 42 seconds.

Cook?s wasn?t the only mission to suffer from this. Astronomers were tracking the event from 76 different points around the world, and none obtained sufficiently accurate measurements to determine the scale of the solar system. It would have to wait for a future generation of astronomers.

While the mortality rate was surprisingly low on the journey out, Cook lost 38 of the original Endeavor?s company on the trip home, including Green, the ship?s astronomer. Most succumbed to malaria and other diseases picked up during a stopover in the port of Jakarta. A 40% casualty is horrifying by today?s standards, but Cook expected half the crew to perish; he probably figured they got off easy.

Even those who survived didn?t fare too well, if the tale of the unfortunate Guillaume Le Gentil is any indication. He was part of a French expedition bound for the colony of Pondicherry in India to measure the transit of Venus there. Unfortunately, war broke out between France and England shortly after his departure, and the British decided to occupy Pondicherry. So Le Gentil and his crew were forced to try to witness the June 1761 transit from Mauritius (then known as Ile de France).

But Le Gentil found it impossible to make accurate measurements with the ship rolling about. So he figured, ?Well, I?m already here, and there will be another transit in eight years. I might as well stick around for it!? I?m sure it sounds more impressive uttered in a sultry French accent. He spent some time in Madagascar, and decided Manila in the Philippines would be a terrific spot to witness the 1769 transit, but let?s just say that once he got there, he found the Spanish authorities in charge were ?hostile? to the idea.

So he headed back to Pondicherry, now safely back in French hands, built a small observatory, and waited. The Big Day arrived, June 4, 1769 ? and the sky was too overcast to see anything. After all that, Le Gentil failed to witness either transit of Venus. ?Merde!? he no doubt muttered to himself, before packing up to return to France. Except his bad luck continued. An outbreak of dysentery delayed the ship?s departure, and then a storm broke out, so he ended up stranded at Ile Bourbon until he finally found passage home on a Spanish ship, eleven years after first setting out.

Fate spat on poor Guillaume yet again. It was not an auspicious homecoming. See, apparently Le Gentil had neglected to send word to his wife or relatives about his decision to hang out an extra eight years until the next transit. She had him declared legally dead.

In his passion to chase down the transit of Venus, Le Gentil had lost everything. Literally. Another astronomer had taken his place at the Royal Academy of Sciences, so he?d lost his job. His wife had remarried, and his relatives had ?enthusiastically plundered his estate.? So he had no fortune left, either.

In the end, the king intervened and put everything right, as only an 18th century sovereign could do. Le Gentil got his job back, his estate back, found a new (hopefully more patient) wife, and lived happily until he died 21 years later. He has since been immortalized in the play Transit of Venus by playwright Maureen Hunter

That?s how passionate folks were (and are!) about science, and rare events like the transit of Venus. Many lives and fortunes were lost on this quest to measure the solar system.

By the time the next pair of transits rolled around on December 8, 1874, and December 6, 1882, respectively, photography had been invented, and astronomers could now take a picture to record the event for posterity. There were more expeditions and more measurements taken, and by taking all the measurements of the last four transits into consideration, astronomers were able to refine Horrocks? original distance estimate of the distance between the Earth and the sun to 149.49 kilometers, very close to the actual distance of 149.6 million kilometers.

There wasn?t a transit of Venus for the entire 20th century. The last one was in 2004. These days, modern astronomers are more interested in using the transits to assist in the hunt for extrasolar planets, especially smaller ones that are difficult to detect using current methods. The idea is that by measuring the light intensity during the transit, as Venus blocks out some of the sun?s light, astronomers could confirm that this slight dimming (a mere 0.001 magnitude) is a sign of an orbiting planet. And then they can use a similar approach to search for planets in other star systems.

This time around, astronomers are making use of some of the instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to view the transit in several different wavelengths (UV to near-infrared), thereby dividing the sunlight into its constituent colors, in hopes of learning something about the composition of the Venusian atmosphere. This, in turn, could help analyze the atmospheres of extrasolar planets to determine if any are hospitable to life.

But Hubble can?t stare at the sun directly, any more than we can; it would fry its cameras. So the plan is point the telescope at the surface of the moon instead, using it as a mirror to capture reflected sunlight ? a high-tech 21st century version of Horrocks? simple 17th century set-up. Then they can isolate that small fraction of the light that makes it through the Venusian atmosphere, which should contain the chemical ?fingerprints? of that atmosphere.

The astronomers only have one shot at this, so the stakes are high. We won?t see another transit of Venus until December 11, 2117, and by that time, well, nobody reading this will be alive. And it won?t be visible from much of the US.

For the rest of us, the transit next month will be something we can watch, appreciate, and then reflect upon the transitory nature of human existence compared to the mind-boggling time scales of the cosmos ? a sentiment Horrocks captured in a bit of verse he penned while ruminating on the long periods between Venusian transits:

?? Thy return
Posterity shall witness; years must roll
Away, but then at length the splendid sight
Again shall greet our distant children?s eyes.?

Mark Hyman, MD: Can Social Networks Cure Disease? Part I

Last month I gave a talk at TEDMED on how social networks may be an unexpected solution to our heath care crisis.

Here's how my talk went:

I want to tell you a story of how a skinny Haitian chicken and a bowl of beet and cabbage soup turned my world upside down and helped me think differently about how we might deal with the crazy explosion of lifestyle-driven chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and obesity -- what I like to call DIABESITY!

How can we even think about solving this problem that will cost the global economy $47 trillion over the next 20 years and by the end of this decade kill 50 million people a year, killing more than twice as many people as infectious disease?

How do we think about a world -- where now there are more people who are overweight than are starving?

How do we think about a world where there soon will be half a billion diabetics and almost a billion pre-diabetics and only a fraction of doctors and health care workers needed to take care of them? These are not just diseases of affluence, but are exploding in the poorest countries on earth.

So what does a skinny Haitian chicken have to do with rethinking how we approach chronic lifestyle-driven diseases? My rethinking started on Jan. 1, 2010 -- the first day of the first month of the first year of this new decade. I had just finished a book about Paul Farmer, who successfully tackled the worst diseases in the worst places on the planet.

Paul Farmer successfully treated TB and AIDS -- which everyone thought were untreatable in the face of extreme poverty in places like Haiti, Lima or Rwanda.

Paul realized we didn't need a new advance in science or a new medication but something very simple -- to rebuild community and connection in broken communities.

Paul's genius was his insight that the key to solving insoluble health care problems was each other, was people helping people, or what some call peer support. Paul's genius was the idea of accompaniment -- accompanying each other to health, helping each other build back their communities with clean water, food, going to each other's houses, making sure their sick neighbor knew how and knew when to take their medication.

And it wasn't just a better delivery model for the right drug or the right information. The community was part of the medicine, part of the cure.

That was how I spent that first day in January of the new decade -- an auspicious day. Thinking about how Paul's insight about infectious disease might help us solve our epidemic of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

And as this idea was shaking up my world, disaster happened. On Jan. 12, 2010, just a few days later, that massive earthquake hit Haiti.

Two days after that, I arrived at sunset with Paul Farmer, who I just called out of the blue because I knew he would know where to go and asked him to come with us on a small plane with our small medical team. We arrived into chaos, devastation and overwhelming suffering. We unloaded our plane and went directly to the main public health hospital in Port au Prince.

After a week of 20-hour days amidst amputated limbs and amputated lives, I finally got to sit and eat a meal of rice and some skinny Haitian chicken with the director of the hospital -- Dr. Alix Lassegue. As we had our first meal in days and tried to find some meat on that skinny chicken I asked Dr. Lassegue what was the most common admitting diagnosis here before the earthquake -- here in the main public hospital in Haiti that served 8 million people!

I thought he would say TB, AIDS, or malaria. But here in the poorest country in the Western hemisphere in one of the poorest countries in the world it wasn't TB or AIDS but diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure -- 90 percent of which are preventable and often reversible through lifestyle.

Those chronic diseases have reached every corner of the globe and touch everyone on the planet -- it is you or someone you know or love. Most of these conditions -- heart disease, high blood pressure, many cancers, and stroke, even dementia -- are caused by the same root problem.

Diabesity: the continuum from a little bit of belly fat to pre-diabetes to full-blown Type 2 diabetes.

I am thinking to myself while sitting in the crumbling hospital building in Haiti where diabetes was the main admitting diagnosis, "How do we deal with this crazy, overwhelming problem of obesity driven disease that's getting worse and worse, and costing more and more despite our best efforts to treat it with medication and surgery?"

How do we deal with the fact that diabesity will soon affect 1 in 2 Americans -- that's every other person in America. And that full-blown Type 2 diabetes affects nearly 1 in 10 Americans and 1 in 5 African-Americans and 1 in 4 Medicare patients. And that 1 in 3 Medicare dollars is spent on diabetes. And that 1 in 3 children born today will have Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.

And that 80 percent of the world's diabetics are in poor countries, and that one-half all diabetes and almost all of pre-diabetics are not even diagnosed.

So it was in the aftermath of being up to my elbows in blood, pus and broken bones, broken lives and broken hearts that I first understood what I had completely neglected over the last 15 years of diving deep into systems biology and genomics.

I was so hyper-focused on biological networks and systems medicine or network medicine as the answer to solving the puzzle of chronic disease -- on turning the dials on biology for individuals -- that I missed something much more important.

That most chronic disease is very often a social disease and not just a problem of biology!

We know that you are more likely to be overweight if your friend's friend is overweight than if your parents are overweight. That the genetic threads that connect us may be less important than the social threads -- that our social connections and our ancient need to be part of a tribe may be a way out of our epidemic of chronic disease.

That just maybe sociogenomics -- or how social networks influence health and disease and how social networks alter gene expression, are where we need to look for the solution.

In some places, gastric bypasses are being touted as a cure for diabetes. As if you could cut out a poor lifestyle like a wart. Is this really a solution for our 400 million diabetics at a cost of $30,000 per person -- or $12 trillion?

We can't medicate our way out of a bad diet. Taking a statin while downing a double cheeseburger, fries and a soda just doesn't make any sense.

But there has been a new drug discovered that can beneficially modulate thousands of genes and enhance the function of dozen of hormones and regulate tens of thousands of protein networks and can prevent cure and even reverse most chronic disease. And it works faster, better and is cheaper than any other drug discovered and it is available to almost everyone on the planet right now.

It is food. We now know that food is information, not just calories, and that it can upgrade your biologic software. The majority of chronic disease is primarily a food-borne illness. We ate ourselves into this problem, and we have to eat ourselves out of it.

High cholesterol is not a statin deficiency, and diabetes is not an Avandia deficiency. It is not doing the same things better. What we are doing is not really working. It is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Statins increase the risk of diabetes by 48 percent in women. Avandia, the No. 1 blockbuster drug for diabetes, killed nearly 200,000 from heart attacks since it was introduced on the market in 1999.

So statins designed to prevent heart attacks causes diabetes and the drugs designed to treat diabetes cause heart attacks.

This is Pharmageddon.

Even if those approaches worked, we just don't have enough doctors and hospitals and health care workers to deal with the massive number of chronically sick people on the planet.

After Haiti I realized that the answer had to be somewhere else. If social networks can promote unhealthy lifestyles, maybe we can use social networks to create health.

We know how to prevent, treat and even reverse diabetes and heart disease, so why don't we do it, why have we failed so miserably at this?

We can eradicate Type 2 diabetes just like Larry Brilliant helped eradicate smallpox.

But people give up when they try to think about the obesity and chronic disease that's killing most people on the planet.

It's TOO overwhelming. It is TOO big. But I don't think it is -- I think it is a small problem, it's a local problem, a community problem.

After I came back from Haiti I lay awake thinking about how are we REALLY going to deal with this; I thought maybe we need to decentralize and democratize health care.

I realized that if you were sick, the best place to create health might NOT be the doctor's office or clinic but your own community with a little help from your friends.

I realized that getting healthy is a team sport! Click here for Part II of the story.

UK surveillance could yield window into lives

LONDON (AP) ? British officials have given their word: "We won't read your emails."

But experts say that its proposed new surveillance program, unveiled last week as part of the government's annual legislative program, will gather so much data that spooks won't have to read your messages to guess what you're up to.

The U.K. Home Office stresses that it is not seeking to read the content of every Britons' communications, saying the data it was seeking "is NOT the content of any communication." It is, however, seeking information on who's sending the message, whom it's sent to, where it's sent from, and potentially other details including a message's length and its format.

The government's proposal is just a draft bill, so it could be modified or scrapped. But if passed in its current form, it would put a huge amount of personal data at the government's disposal, which it could potentially use to deduce a startling amount about Britons' private life ? from sleep patterns to driving habits or even infidelity.

"We're really entering a whole new phase of analysis based on the data that we can collect," said Gerald Kane, an information systems expert at Boston College. "There is quite a lot you can learn."

The ocean of information is hard to fathom. Britons generate 4 billion hours of voice calls and 130 billion text messages annually, according to industry figures. In 2008 the BBC put the annual number of U.K.-linked emails at around 1 trillion. Then there are instant messaging services run by companies such as BlackBerry, Internet telephony services such as Skype, chat rooms, and in-game services liked those used by World of Warcraft.

Communications service providers, who would log the details of all that back-and-forth, believe that the government's program would force them to process petabytes (1 quadrillion bytes) of information every day. It's a mind-bogglingly large amount of data on the scale of every book, every movie, and every piece of music ever released.

So even without opening emails, how much can British spooks learn about who's sending them?

THEY'LL SEE THE RED FLAGS

Do you know how fast you were going?

Your phone does.

If you sent a first text from London before stepping behind the wheel, and a second one from a service station outside Manchester only three hours later, authorities could infer that you broke the speed limit to cover the roughly 200 miles which separate the two.

Crunching location data and communications patterns gives a remarkable rich view of a person's lives ? and their misadventures.

Ken Altshuler, of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, raves about the benefits which smartphones and social media have brought to savvy divorce attorneys. Lawyers don't need sophisticated data mining software to spot evidence of infidelity or hints of hidden wealth when they review phone records or text traffic, he said.

"One name, one phone number that's not on our client's radar, and our curiosity is piqued," he said. The more the communication ? a late-night text sent to a work colleague, an unexplained international phone call ? is out of character, "the more of a red flag we see."

THEY'LL KNOW HOW YOU'RE SLEEPING

The ebb and flow of electronic communication ?that call to your mother just before bed, that early-morning email to your boss saying you'll be late ? frames our waking lives.

"You can figure somebody's sleep patterns, their weekly pattern of work," said Tony Jebara, a Columbia University machine learning expert. In 2006, he helped found New York-based Sense Networks, which crunches phone data to do just that.

Jebara said that calls made from the same location between 9 and 5 are a good indication of where a person works; the frequency of email traffic to or from a person's work account is a good hint of his or her work ethic; dramatic changes to a person's electronic routine might suggest a promotion ? or a redundancy.

"You can quickly figure out when somebody lost their job," Jebara said, adding: "Credit card companies have been interested in that for a while."

THEY'LL KNOW WHO'S THE BOSS

Drill down, and communication can reveal remarkably rich information. For example, does office worker A answer office worker B's missives within minutes of the message being sent? Does B often leave colleagues' emails unanswered for hours on end? If so, B probably stands for "boss."

That's an example of what Jebara's Columbia colleagues described as "automated social hierarchy detection," a technique which can infer who gives the orders, who's respected, and who's ignored based purely on whose emails get answered and how quickly. In 2007 four of them analyzed traffic taken from the Enron Corporation's email archive to correctly guess the seniority of several top-level managers.

Intelligence agencies may not need such tools to untangle corporate flowcharts, but identifying ringleaders becomes more important when tracking a suspected terrorist cell.

"If you piece together the chain of influence, then you can find the central authority," he said. "You can figure that out without looking at the content."

THEY'LL KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO

Seeing how networks of people communicate isn't just about finding your boss, it's about figuring out who are your friends.

Programs already exist to determine the density of communications ? something that can identify close groups of friends or family without even knowing who's who. If one user is identified as suspicious, then the users closest to him or her might get a second look as well.

"Let's say we find out somebody in the U.K. is a terrorist," said Kane. "You know exactly who he talks to on almost every channel, so BOOM you know his 10 closest contacts. Knowing that information not only allows you to go to his house, but allows you to go to their houses as well."

A SNOOPER'S CHARTER?

Detective work at the stroke of a key is clearly attractive to spy agencies. British officialdom has been pushing for the mass surveillance program for years, but civil libertarians are perturbed, branding the proposal a "snooper's charter."

Kane said that the surveillance regime had to be seen in the context of social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn, where hundreds of millions of people were constantly volunteering information about themselves, their friends, their family and their colleagues.

"There's no sense in getting all Big Brother-ish that there are legitimate safeguards in place," he said. "The bottom line is that we're all leaving digital trails, everywhere, all the time. The whole concept of privacy is shifting daily."

10 Step Assessment: How to Hire an SEO Consultant or Internet ...

Are you looking to hire an SEO company? How about social media marketing, or general Internet marketing for your business? Hire the right company using my ten easily verifiable, online indicators of SEO and marketing competence.

SEO and marketing are crucial services for any business hoping to get traffic and make money online. This article shows you free tools, tips and tricks to grade the SEO, social, technical, and marketing skills of the people you entrust with the success of your enterprise.

The basic litmus test for deciding whether an SEO consultant, or digital marketing company can do a good job for your business, is whether or not they do a good job on their own business.

1. High Google PageRank

Any SEO company that promises to help your performance in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), should be able to muster a good Google PageRank for their own site, right?

In general, don?t consider working with an SEO company with a PageRank of lower than 4. Ideally a PR of 5 and up is ideal.

It?s easy to test the PageRank for any domain using one or more of the following:

Some prominent SEO website PageRanks

PageRanks do fluctuate up and down from time to time, but usually only by a point or so, so it?s worth taking a look at the Google PageRank of some prominent SEO companies, consultancies or services:

2. Blog popularity

As Google?s Panda and Penguin algorithms continue their march against webspam SEO, so high quality content and blogs are starting to benefit.

If your business needs marketing and SEO, then only companies that can demonstrate their own blog popularity are showing that their methods are Panda and Penguin compliant.

There are a number of Key indicators of blog popularity. One the easiest to use is Technorati. Any good business blog should have a presence on Technorati, and this makes it easy to ascertain their popularity.

Popular business and small business blogs on Technorati

Let?s take a look at some of the blogs leading the way on Technorati (bear in mind that Technorati rankings move up and down on a daily basis, so the rankings quoted here may have changed by the time you read this):

Remember that these rankings relate to the topic ?small business? only. Sites like Social Media Explorer are huge, and will rank highly for other topics too. However, if you?re looking to grow your business online, then the bloggers in the ?business? and ?small business? categories are relevant to you.

3. Social media clout (Klout)

These days, social media plays an important role in growing and marketing a business online. Fortunately, it?s super easy to get a rough idea of the social marketing oomph, your potential SEO and marketing company has built up for themselves using Klout.

I have to stress that Klout is not always accurate and can be used as a rough guide only. You can also check on the number of Twitter followers, or Google+ followers.

4. High rankings in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)

Is there much point in hiring an SEO company or service that can?t get their own content to rank highly? While, by definition, not every good SEO company can get to the top position for ?SEO company?, most good ones can still rank highly on the content they do create.

Recently, Google?s Penguin algorithm update was released. It caused, in many cases, a violent reaction among SEOs and generated plenty of debate. As you can imagine, a lot of content was produced in a very short amount of time.

Do a search for ?Penguin friendly SEO?. You?ll see my article entitled ?Panda & Penguin friendly SEO: A business guide to recovering from Google?s algorithm updates? in first place. Not bad, right?

5. Evidence of technical ability

Proper SEO requires technical ability and experience. SEO is not only about making great content, it?s also about ensuring that your business platform is optimized correctly. Any good SEO will have the following implemented on their site:

  • Canonical URLs
  • Dublin core creator and publisher
  • Analytics
  • Keyword and Description META tags
  • WWW Resolve
  • Social sharing
  • ALT & TITLE tags on all images

You can test for most of these by right clicking on any page and selecting the ?View source? option.

6. High WooRank score

Go to WooRank and type in the domain of the SEO or marketing service you are considering. WooRank will generate a fairly useful, automated SEO and social analysis of the website and spit out an overall score out of 100.

The WooRank score is not necessarily entirely accurate, so again use it as a guide and not gospel. However, you should only consider companies who can muster a highly competent score of 65 or more.

By way of comparison, Site prebuilder generally scores in the low 70s, which is far higher than some very large SEO & marketing companies.

7. Google Authorship

Google authorship is not necessarily an indication of technical competency, or any type of competency for that matter. It is very easy for anyone to set up Google authorship for their content.

However, Google authorship provides an excellent advantage for content producers to get more traffic, trust and authority because it embeds your Google+ profile into Google search results, next to any content that you have created.

This means that people can a) see who you are, and b) read more articles by you. Any SEO that doesn?t have this implemented is simply not? experienced or aware enough. Think of it like a basic test of ?keeping with the times?.

Refer back to my earlier Google search example (?Penguin friendly SEO?) to see an authorship result in action.

8. Performance

To my mind, a complete SEO service should be technically competent. They should have development and programming experience. Even if they are not hardcore PHP programmers, they should have solid HTML skills.

For example, page speed is an important aspect of Google?s PageRank algorithm, so a good SEO should know how to:

  • aggregate CSS and JavaScript files
  • Compress CSS and JS files
  • GZip web content
  • Cache static content
  • Optimize server performance

You can test the page speeds of potential SEO companies using something like YSlow. Check out this article that compares the performance SEO of Site prebuilder and five of the biggest SEO and marketing sites on the net.

9. Experience

Well duh! Experience is important. But, as mentioned you can verify the claims of any SEO company by checking out all the criteria laid out in this article against their website.

Since any company should be able to achieve what they claim for their own blog or business website, the only real experience you need to verify is if they have done it for themselves.

10. English and language

SEO is actually about creating a quality browsing experience for humans. The better your site?s content, the more likely people will be to convert into fans, followers and paying customers.

Is there much point in hiring an SEO firm that can?t write English? Or, if your site is targeted at Spanish or German speakers, is there much point in hiring an SEO who can only speak Chinese?

Look for evidence of high writing abilities in your chosen language. Has your SEO company published any books internationally that have gone on to be bestsellers, and translated into many different languages?

When I wrote Drupal 6 a few years back, it was reviewed with 8 out of 10 on Slashdot and went on to be a bestseller, translated into French, German, Polish, and more.

The global success of that book helped put me on the map, and continues to generate speaking requests and consulting prospects to this day.

Your business relies on quality SEO and Internet marketing. Is your SEO firm of the highest caliber? Share your thoughts in the comments on join the discussion on Twitter or LinkedIn.

VoIP Phone Systems - New Generation of Communication / Latest ...

Forward thinking businesses understand that communication is key to their success, driving efficiency and productivity, along with projecting a professional vision to the outside world.

Choosing the right telephony package is a key decision in a business,? Midland Telecom are specialists installers of cutting edge telephone solutions, and we firmly believe that VoIP phone systems represent the next generation of communication platforms.

What is VoIP?

VoIP phone systems allow telephone calls to be made over the Internet or other IP networks (it stands for Voice over Internet Protocol) rather than the traditional PSTN (public services telephone network) system. VoIP converts the call into digital data which can then be delivered over a data network like the Internet, and there are various benefits to this technology, namely Free calls between sites, including Home workers, a single network solution in a single language for the comfort of IT managers, Hot Desking, and easy moves and changes.

Cost Effective Communication

As a business owner, you will be constantly on the lookout for ways to save money, and VoIP phone systems provide you with exactly that opportunity. Calls can be made between VOIP Phone Systems or single VOIP Users either to a fixed VOIP Phone or a SIP Softclient on a Smartphone, tablet or Laptop, using the existing VPN set up that will be in place, effectively piggy backing Voice calls free of charge over the already paid for data LAN/WAN/VPN.

No Need to Set up Multiple Systems

VOIP/SIP Solutions are perfect for companies with Multiple Sites, either nationally or globally.

If your business operates over numerous sites, Historically you would have to set up communication solutions on each separate site, with little or no convergence between the sites.? With VoIP however, as long as each site is connected via a LAN (Local Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network), they can all share the same features of VoIP without needing to set up individual systems.

(AP) ? A tractor-trailer crash in upstate New York has sent 18 tons of Greek yogurt spilling alongside a highway.

WBNG-TV reports (http://bit.ly/Jsknkj ) that a truck hauling 36,000 pounds of Chobani yogurt was traveling west on Interstate 88 when it crashed on a curve and overturned late Monday night in the Broome County town of Chenango, just north of Binghamton.

The station reports that the yogurt spilled on the highway's shoulder and down a hillside. The sheriff's office says crews are still cleaning up the crash scene Tuesday morning.

The 24-year-old Nebraska man who was driving the truck wasn't seriously injured. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed and improper lane use.

The westbound lanes of I-88 were closed for a time after the crash.
