Philly Food and Drink: Famous 4th Street Deli (19th Street)
The matzoh ball soup, pictured above, was amazing -- with white meat chicken and the matzoh ball being substantive without crossing the line in density.? The grilled cheese tasted purely of butter and of this, I can never complain.? The stuffed cabbage, serve with potato pancakes and kishka.? Kishka, I asked?? Our server was dubious, noting it was an acquired taste.? It turns out to be sausage or stuffed intestine with a filling made of meat or meal (so says wikipedia) and a taste that I did not, in fact, acquire that evening.
The stuffed cabbage was apparently done in traditional Jewish deli style, not in my traditional Pennsylvania Dutch grandmother's style, meaning it was bizarrely, sugary sweet.? Not my favorite.
We got some sides with our grilled cheese (did I mention the need for massive amounts of carbs?).? The challah stuffing was also strangely sweet and the onion mashed potatoes, pictured left, while enough to feed a small army, were strangely less than great.? Both simultaneously buttery and dry, the potatoes had too many onions for a skewed flavor balance that didn't work for me.
For dessert, however, after much debate and eschewing of the ever-popular black and white cookie, we opted for the checkerboard cake, with mocha-like buttercream frosting.? It was the size of my arm and I ate leftovers from it for three days - after I split it with MDC.? Really amazing, moist, tasty cake.
Around since 1923 and best known for being the central gathering?on many an election day, Fourth Street reinvented itself in 2005, changing hands, and ultimately expanding to its Rittenhouse location.? I like the atmosphere, white subway tiles, and older crowd.? Where its food sometimes fails, its scale still wows.? Someday I will learn the scientific nomenclature around the high one gets from massive amounts of carbohydrates.? In the mean time, I will call it comforted.?

Study: Candidates' plans lead to huge deficits

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Huge tax cuts in the budget plans of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum would produce the kinds of trillion-dollar-plus deficits that the GOP candidates are blaming on President Barack Obama.
That's the finding by the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a Washington-based budget watchdog group.
The study also says the more modest tax and spending plans of Mitt Romney wouldn't make a dent in deficits that are on track to average $800 billion or so a year over the coming decade under current trends and policies ? and could add to them considerably.
Only Ron Paul, who calls for wrenching budget cuts that dwarf anything proposed by his three rivals, would reduce the flow of red ink. But even Paul's plan would leave in place a deficit in the $500 billion range by the end of his first term.
The candidates' budget plans provide a sharp contrast with those of President Barack Obama, who released his latest fiscal blueprint just last week. Like Obama, the GOP candidates have the luxury of suspending political reality and assuming lawmakers would quickly enact their ideas into law.
That translates into a tax code in which taxes on investments and capital gains are sharply reduced or eliminated. Each Republican candidate would eliminate inheritance taxes on large estates. And tax rates on individuals would be cut as well ? all in the face of deficits that economists say would eventually cripple the economy.
The results, according to the study, would be higher deficits, except in the case of Paul, whose proposed cuts to the military and other programs make even tea partyers blanche.
According to the study, Gingrich's plan would add $7 trillion to the nation's debt over the coming nine years ? almost doubling the deficits that would be recorded if the government basically ran on autopilot. Santorum's plan would add $4.5 trillion over the period, or about $500 billion to the deficit every year on average.
By contrast, Romney's proposal would add $250 billion to the deficit over nine years, though that estimate was generated before he unveiled a new tax plan this week that could add considerably to the deficit.
By the end of fiscal 2016, little more than a month before Election Day, Gingrich's plan would produce a deficit of 7.8 percent of the economy, or almost $1.5 trillion. Santorum's blueprint would produce a deficit in the $1.2 trillion range, or 6.5 percent of gross domestic product, or GDP. And Romney's plan ? given the benefit of the doubt since his new tax plan is so vague ? would generate a 2016 deficit of $700 billion to $800 billion or so.
Obama's budget claims a $649 billion deficit by 2016, relying on tax increases to do it.
The group didn't publish specific deficit figures for 2016 but provided estimates of them as a percentage of GDP to The Associated Press, which calculated them based on the GDP estimates of the Congressional Budget Office.
Paul's budget plans include eliminating five Cabinet departments, immediately ending operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sharply cutting federal programs like Medicaid and food stamps. It would reduce the deficit by $2.2 trillion over nine years. He is the only candidate whose spending cuts exceed the amount of revenue lost by cutting taxes.
The four GOP candidates vying to replace Obama each promise sweeping tax cuts, even as the deficit under current policies would never fall below $600 billion over the coming decade.
Gingrich, for example, would give taxpayers the option of a 15 percent flat tax rate, while Santorum promises to reduce the current five-bracket system to two, with rates of 28 percent and 10 percent. Each idea would mean trillions of dollars less in revenue for the government.
Romney's latest tax plan would cut the top income tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent and the other rates by 20 percent each, paid for by broadening the tax base and eliminating numerous deductions. But the plan lacks sufficient specifics to be estimated with any precision.
The candidates' ambitious budget plans contrast with GOP leaders in Congress, who have focused on retaining the full menu of Bush-era tax cuts rather than attempting to cut taxes further ? and have opened the door to higher tax revenues as part of a comprehensive deficit-cutting deal.
Last week, Obama proposed tax increases of almost $2 trillion over the coming decade ? chiefly by ending Bush-era cuts on individual income exceeding $200,000 a year and family income exceeding $250,000.
The budget group's advisers include many Democratic deficit hawks and Republicans unafraid to advocate for higher taxes. The group acknowledged plenty of wiggle room in the study since many of the candidates' proposals are vague or haven't been reviewed by official sources, like the CBO.
The Tax Policy Center, a respected joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, provided the basis for many of the estimates of the candidates' tax proposals.
The group offers three scenarios for each candidate, which incorporated different assumptions that depend on how vague or specific a candidate's proposals are. The group chiefly trumpeted an "intermediate" scenario that represented the group's best estimate of the candidate's budget plans.
By contrast, the Gingrich campaign on Thursday produced an estimate by a friendly economist that predicts his budget would balance by the end of his first term and that economic growth under his supply-side tax cuts would average 4.4 percent a year over the coming decade, far higher than predicted by the budget group.

Atlanta Personal Injury Attorney Provides Legal Counsel For The ...
Today, you might discover a variety of circumstances that may lead to the need for legal counsel when you?ve been involved in some type of accident. There is an Atlanta personal injury lawyer who wants to help people who are trying to do just that. When you find yourself in need of help resolving this type of situation, you can turn to a lawyer for help.
Being in a car accident can result in many different problems for a person. The required minimum insurance coverage is designed to pay the cost of medical care for a person who is injured in the other vehicle in a crash that was your fault. You might run into problems when the other driver does not have the coverage or they don?t have the proper amount of coverage.
Other situations might include a problem with a product which might lead to an injury. When you are working on this type of circumstance you will likely find that you will need to have representation because you need to work with the larger corporate lawyers. If you are dealing with a situation such as that, it is best to find your own representation to avoid delays and problems.
Other types of injuries might include a slip-and-fall accident on the property of another individual. This usually means that their homeowner?s insurance must cover your medical bills. However because in some areas homeowner insurance is not mandated, you may find that they don?t have any which leaves the medical bills unpaid.
Your first step really needs to be finding the care that is required for whatever injury you may have sustained. After that is dealt with you can begin the process of recovering the costs for the care. Whether you need to file a suit against a person or an insurance company, you will find that the process goes much more smoothly when you have legal counsel available.
If the responsible party is not paying the bills as required or the insurance company is trying to reject your claim, you will find that getting an Atlanta personal injury lawyer will be very helpful. They understand the process and probably have dealt with many of the attempts to get out of paying the bills through insurance companies and other private individuals as well. When you can get legal counsel you will find it it quickly cleared up.
You can find a complete summary of the reasons why you should hire an Atlanta personal injury lawyer at http://www.AtlantaHurt.com right now.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
?All you need is love.?
?- John Lennon (1940-1980)
Facts about Tweens and Teen and Dating Violence
Prevalence of Violence in Tweens
- Approximately one in three adolescent girls in the Unites States is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner.
- In a national online survey, one in five tweens ? age 11 to 14 ? say their friends are victims of dating violence and nearly half who are in relationships know friends who are verbally abused.
- A survey found that one in four 7th grade girls (24.9 percent) and more than one in five boys (21.2 percent) reported perpetrating physical violence in a dating relationship in the past year.
- Boys are more likely to inflict injuries as a result of perpetrating dating violence than girls. This trend ? where girls slap and push and boys hit and punch ? continues into adulthood.
Prevalence of Violence in Teens
- Nationwide, nearly one in ten high-school students (9.8 percent) has been hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
- Teens in same-sex relationships experience rates of violence and abuse similar to rates experienced by teens in heterosexual relationships. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health finds that nearly one in four teens and young adults (ages 12-21 years) in same-sex romantic or sexual relationships reported some type of partner violence victimization in the past year-and-a-half. One in ten reported experiencing physical violence by a dating partner. Females were more likely to report victimization than males.
- Nearly one in ten 15-year-old girls disclosed experiencing physical dating violence and one in four disclosed experiencing psychological abuse.
- Nearly one in three sexually active adolescent girls in 9th to 12th grade (31.5 percent) report ever experiencing physical or sexual violence from dating partners.
- One in four teen girls in a relationship (26 percent) says she has been threatened with violence or experienced verbal abuse, and 13 percent say they were physically hurt or hit.
- One in three teens reports knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, or physically hurt by a partner.
Teen Dating Violence Facts vs. Myths
Myth
Teen dating violence rarely happens.
Fact
Teen dating violence is as common as domestic violence in adult relationships. A 2001 study of high school students conducted by Harvard University found that one in five teenage girls had been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.
?
Myth
Teen girls are as abusive as boys.
Fact
Research shows that teen girls are not as likely to be as abusive as teen boys. Teen boys are far more likely to initiate violence and teen girls are more likely to be violent in a case of self-defense.
?
Myth
Some victims of teen dating violence or sexual assault provoke the violence committed by their dates by making them jealous, acting mean, or teasing them into thinking they want to have sex.
Fact
Dating violence is NEVER a victim?s fault. There is no such thing as victim precipitated violence.
?
Myth
Teen dating violence is just arguing. It?s not dangerous like domestic violence in adult relationships.
Fact
Teen dating violence can be very dangerous ? sometimes lethal. Results of teen dating violence and sexual assault include serious physical harm, emotional damage, sexually transmitted disease, unwanted pregnancy, and death.
?
Myth
Teen dating violence only occurs between boys and girls.
Fact
Teen dating violence and sexual assault is estimated to occur between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth at about the same rate as in straight teen relationships. (NCAVP, 2001; Dahir, 1999) However, LGBTQ youth are even less likely than heterosexual youth to tell anyone or seek help, and there are fewer resources for these teens.
?
Myth
Teens experiencing dating violence usually tell a trusted adult.
Fact
Teens experiencing dating violence usually tell no one. When they do tell, they usually tell another teen. One study found that only 6% of girls and 11% of boys told anyone about the abuse that they experienced (O?Keefe and Treister, 1998).
?
Myth
Alcohol and drugs can cause teen dating violence and sexual assault.
Fact
Alcohol and drugs can and do exacerbate violence, but they are NEVER the cause of violence (Bennett, 1997; Schechter and Ganley, 1995).
?
Myth
Sexual assault rarely happens to teens, and when it does, it is perpetrated by a stranger.
Fact
Middle school, high school, and college age women experience a higher rate of rape than any other group. Rape is most likely to be perpetrated by someone the victim knows, such as a friend, an acquaintance, a date, a family member, or a partner (Silverman, Raj, Mucci, and Hathaway, 2001; Warshaw, 1988; Haplem, Oslak, Young, Martin, and Kupper, 2001).
?
Myth
Some teens like to be abused that?s why they stay in the relationships.
Fact
No one likes to be controlled or abused! There are many reasons youth stay in abusive relationships. These include:
- Having a boyfriend or girlfriend is very important to a youth?s social status;
- Wanting to be loved and needed;
- Believing the abuser?s apologies and promises to never do it again; and
- Peer pressure.
Television, music, movies and other forms of media normalize violence (Aldridge, Friedman, and Occhiuzzo Giggans, 1995).
Dating Abuse Statistics
Too Common
- Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.
- One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.
- One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
- One quarter of high school girls have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.
Why Focus on Young People?
- Girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence ? almost triple the national average.
- Violent behavior typically begins between the ages of 12 and 18.
- The severity of intimate partner violence is often greater in cases where the pattern of abuse was established in adolescence.
- About 72% of eighth and ninth graders are ?dating?.
Long-lasting Effects
- Violent relationships in adolescence can have serious ramifications by putting the victims at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior and further domestic violence.
- Being physically or sexually abused makes teen girls six times more likely to become pregnant and twice as likely to get a STI.
- Half of youth who have been victims of both dating violence and rape attempt suicide, compared to 12.5% of non-abused girls and 5.4% of non-abused boys.
Dating Violence and the Law
- Eight states currently do not include dating relationships in their definition of domestic violence. As a result, young victims of dating abuse often cannot apply for restraining orders.
- New Hampshire is the only state where the law specifically allows a minor of any age to apply for a protection order; more than half of states do not specify the minimum age of a petitioner.
- Currently only one juvenile domestic violence court in the country focuses exclusively on teen dating violence.
Lack of Awareness
- Only 33% of teens who were in a violent relationship ever told anyone about the abuse.
- Eighty one percent of parents believe teen dating violence is not an issue or admit they don?t know if it?s an issue.
- A teen?s confusion about the law and their desire for confidentiality are two of the most significant barriers stopping young victims of abuse from seeking help.

Jessica Alba Talks Motherhood and Her New Family-Focused ...
DivineCaroline: What prompted you to create a website like honest.com??
Jessica Alba: Being an actress is my chosen career, but being a mom and providing a healthy lifestyle for my children is my first priority above all else. When I was pregnant with Honor I did a lot of research on the toxicity levels of common household and baby products. What I discovered frightened me. I wanted to change the consumer?s choices as it concerned my family while quickly realizing there wasn?t really anything out there that met my needs, which was getting non-toxic products that are economical and easy to obtain. It was then I decided to work and create a company that would provide parents the peace of mind (that I sought too) for the essentials for every baby and family. ?
DC: Why the name honest??
JA: We chose "honest" because we want to be a company people can really trust. We want to be transparent about what we make and what we do. It was also important for us to be authentic to ourselves. To be honest, we?aren?t perfect, and the business journey is?like parenting in the sense we are?embracing?the journey and always trying to do our best and become better.?We are real and tangible people as well as parents that understand what families need. We really want to deliver on that and not be some big corporation with no social consciousness that only cares about making a profit.
DC: What is the site?s purpose?
JA: Well, it's much more than just a site. It is a product, service, culture and hopefully a real-change agent. The Honest Company is a monthly service that delivers customized bundles of non-toxic, eco-friendly, adorable products directly to your front door. And, beyond creating amazingly effective and beautiful products, we also want to have over-the-top awesome service and programs that help parents create healthier homes. Whatever we can do to support healthy, happy families is what we stand for. Fundamentally, we want to re-create the family brand and go way beyond what people expect from a business. We want to do something that makes the world a better place.
DC: Honest.com makes its own products such as detergent, bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, baby oil, diapers and wipes. What kind of experience do you have in the development of these items? ?
JA: I had zero experience prior to this. That is why I enlisted help from experts and veterans in the health, consumer products, and business fields, like my co-founding partners: Christopher Gavigan (former CEO and Author of Healthy Child Healthy World and 2010 WebMD Health Hero) and Brian Lee (Founder of LegalZoom & ShoeDazzle).
DC: You promote the use of organic products for babies. Why is that so important to you? ?
JA: Choosing organic is just one way parents can reduce their kids' exposure to unwanted toxic chemicals. Children's health and well-being is really important to me, so promoting a healthier lifestyle is a why we are helping ensure a brighter future for all children and families combined.
DC: You suffered many illnesses as a child such as collapsed lungs, numerous cases of?pneumonia?and your?appendix?and tonsils taken out. ?Because of your past has that played a role in why you are so ?pro organic?
JA: Absolutely! ?I'm convinced some of my physical illnesses and sicknesses were all manifestations of the food I put in my body, the air I was breathing, and the products I used every day. ?And many credible experts and doctors all agreed. ??
DC: How has your role as a mom helped you produce this site?
JA: Everything I do and everything I've brought to The Honest Company stems from my perspectives, experiences, challenges, struggles, and what I learned from being a mom. ?It's fundamentally the same job.?
DC: What has been your most difficult challenge in getting this site off of the ground and helping it succeed? ?
JA: The human capital is always the most important - who's on your team? ?We all work so closely together, that it's like family. For me, ensuring the right fit, skills, and experience is most essential in my perspective. ??
DC: What is your hardest obstacle as a mom of two little ones?
JA: The classic answer: getting enough sleep!
DC: Let?s talk logistics of the site. For people who are interested in joining this site, what can they expect to get with their membership?
JA: The Diapers Bundle includes a month's supply of diapers and wipes (based on average usage). The Essentials Bundle includes bath and body care and cleaning products (members get to customize what's included). Members can also expect awesome service and support. I am proud to say not only have we've been getting rave reviews about our products, but we have also received nice compliments about how amazing our support team is.
DC: How much does a membership cost??
JA: A membership to our Diapers Bundle, which costs less than $20 dollars a week, includes a full month's supply of all your child's diapers. ?Also for a limited time, we are offering a one month supply of wipes. ?The Family Essentials Bundle, which costs less than $7 dollars a week includes 5 products that members can personalize every month from our Bath & Skin Care and Home Cleaning product lines.
DC: You also donate a portion of the proceeds to charity. Tell me about that?
JA: Charity is really important to me personally and I've made sure to make it a core pillar of The Honest Company. We want to help all families ? not just the ones that can afford to buy our products. Having said that,?with every product purchased The Honest Company donates product, money, and time to address critical issues affecting families.?This year, our nonprofit partner is?Baby2Baby, an organization that?supplies families in need with essential baby clothing and gear, like baby diapers. As we continue to grow, we will add additional charities, because of our belief in being an active part of transforming this world into a better place.

In What Way LED Lights Function? | Your Home Improvement Place
LED lights have been coined as the best kind of lighting system. However, shopping this from the store can cost an arm and a leg simply because they are generally more expensive than the average lamps. But with a few changes, you can transform your worn out lamp to a LED one. You just need to acquire a LED bulb, do the following steps and you are all set:
Step 1: First, you must plan the circuit that you are going to stick to. If you have no idea how it should work, search for some diagrams over the internet and closely follow it. There are a lot of proposed diagrams when you Google for it. Search for the materials you are going to have. Most of what you need are available in a flashlight so if you have an old time flashlight at home, you may perhaps use the parts including the switch and battery holder. Also find the other basic stuff such as the battery-cell, the LED bulb and the wires.
Step 2: Now organize the circuit to the arrangement you have saved. Use the wire connections to connect the bulbs. When using a parallel circuit, this would be easier to carry out. Test out the connection first of all by attaching the batteries. If it lights up, it is now functioning well. If you have already observed that it is running, solder the circuits and then let it cool down before fitting it on the light bulb case. You should also put in the battery holder that allow you to have easier access so you can adjust it should you want.
Step 3: Now check the makeshift lamp you designed. Attempt for an hour to ascertain if it really works. If you want to have a brightness controller installed in your lamp, you could place a potentiometer in the circuit. Plan the circuit structure first before doing this.
Now you could have a LED lamp you can use any moment. This is a good battery saver as it only eats away less energy. This indicates that you won?t have to change the battery pack as often as you did with other forms of lamps. Also, LEDs do not utilize filaments so they do not burn off and thus prolonging the existence of the lamp. Instead of getting one, why not test out the steps mentioned above and make your very own light? You might have a more efficient lights in your area without paying much.

Why IT Outsourcing Is Beneficial For Your Company | Business ...
IT outsourcing stays strong in this period where companies want to remain on top without spending a lot. Businessmen realize that getting the help of ITO firms is more practical than establishing their very own IT departments.
At present, businessmen are not just limited to employing an ITO company from their country. With time, cultural, and language barriers taken care of, they could choose to engage in offshore outsourcing ? working with an ITO provider based in a different country. With this, businesses, regardless of where they are situated, can employ the best ITO firm.
Meanwhile, due to a few IT outsourcing risks, there are still companies who are hesitant about dealing with an ITO company. Apart from their data being accessible to non-company personnel, they further worry about the exposure of these data to third-parties. However, this is a concern which seriously isn?t without a solution. All it takes is a contract that clearly stipulates that no third-party will be handling the confidential records.
Still, IT outsourcing benefits businesses in more ways than one. This is what many business owners bear in mind. Instead of pouring money on the maintenance of an internal IT department, company owners can pay attention to growing their business. They can do this without the worry of getting subpar service from their ITO partners. Skilled and seasoned individuals work for these ITO providers. Therefore, business owners can expect top-notch service delivered by firms.
On top of it all, ITO companies allow corporations to get expert services at a reasonable cost. This is particularly very helpful at this period of economic constraints. As some still look at it as expensive, several company managers say otherwise. Getting the service of an IT outsourcing company is cost-efficient. As several ITO companies permit customization of subscription plans, businesses can avail of and pay just for the services they need. This format lets them lessen their expenses big time!
To take the lead in this cutthroat business world, companies should deliver the best service. Consequently, this requires engaging the services of experts. Staying at the top with the aid of certified IT professionals at a reasonable cost can be done with the IT outsourcing firms.

ICYMI: Religious Leaders: Obama Violates Basic Rights By ...
Published February 16, 2012 | Associated Press ? By Jim Abrams
Religious leaders told a House panel Thursday the Obama administration was violating basic rights to religious freedom with its policies for requiring that employees of religion-affiliated institutions have access to birth control coverage.
The unity of the religious leaders contrasted with the partisan divide among lawmakers on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, with Democrats saying they had been denied the ability to present witnesses who might support the government stance or speak for the rights of women to reproductive health coverage. They asked why not one of the 10 witnesses at the hearing was a woman.
The issue has sparked a political firestorm for the administration, with Catholics and other religious groups strongly protesting an original Health and Human Services ruling that religion-affiliated institutions such as hospitals and universities must include free birth control coverage in their employee health plans. The churches themselves were exempted from the requirement.
Obama last Friday modified that policy so that insurance companies, and not the organization affiliated with a church, pay for birth control costs, but that didn?t satisfy those testifying at the hearing.
Bishop William E. Lori, representing the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, compared the ruling to a law that would force all food providers, including kosher delicatessens, to serve pork.
?Does the fact that large majorities in society, even large majorities within the protesting religious community, reject a particular religious belief make it permissible for the government to weigh in on one side of that dispute?? he asked.
Churches played a role in the development of health care and ?it is ironic that the religious organizations should have their rights crushed in the name of health care,? said Dr. Craig Mitchell, a Baptist minister and head of the ethics department at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
The policy has split Catholics, a key constituency for Obama to win a second term in office,
The head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, told The Associated Press this week that his group would launch both legislative and court challenges to the health care mandate. Yet there are also some Catholic groups and individuals who have come out in support of the president?s approach.
They were not there at Thursday?s hearing.
?The chairman is promoting a conspiracy theory that the federal government is conducting a `war? against religion,? the top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, said of committee chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif. ?He has also refused to allow a minority witness to testify about the interests of women who want safe and affordable coverage for basic preventive health care, including contraception,? Cummings said of Issa.
Cummings added that a number of Catholic groups that have welcomed the administration?s efforts to find a compromise, including the Catholic Health Association, and Catholics United, were not present at the hearing.
Issa responded that the committee did accept one Democratic witness, the Rev. Barry Lynn, head of Americans United For Separation of Church and State, but rejected a second person, a third-year student at Georgetown Law School named Sandra Fluke.
Issa said the student did not have the appropriate credentials to testify at a hearing focused on threats to religious freedom and not on a single aspect of the health care law.
Committee Democrats said they were told they could have only one witness, and they chose Fluke, who was prepared to speak of the consequences women face when they are denied contraceptive coverage.
?Where are the women?? House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi asked when the hearing was brought up at a news conference. ?The Republican leadership of this Congress thinks it?s appropriate to have a hearing on women?s health and purposely exclude women from the panel, she said. ?I may at some point be moved to explain biology to my colleagues.?
On the other side of the Capitol, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., was pushing an amendment to a highway spending bill that would allow insurance plans to opt out of the mandate on contraception coverage if they have moral objections. The White House opposes the measure.
Religious leaders are telling a house panel that the Barack Obama administration disregarded basic rights to religious freedom in setting policies for access to birth control insurance for employees of religious institutions.
Democrats on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee protested the hearing, saying they were not allowed to introduce witnesses who might support the administration stance or speak up for the rights of women to reproductive health coverage.
The hearing comes a week after Obama announced a change in a politically charged ruling that health insurance plans offered by religion-affiliated institutions such as hospitals and universities must include free birth control coverage.
Obama shifted the burden of paying for such coverage to insurance companies.
The religious leaders testifying said the compromise still violated religious freedom.

What She's Looking For:
Genres/Specialties:
General fiction, Juvenile Fiction, Mind/Body/Spirit, Health, Lifestyle, Cookbooks. (Link)
From the Website:
?Adult Fiction - I like accessible literary fiction, quality upscale commercial fiction, vibrant narrative nonfiction, and compelling memoirs.? When I read a manuscript I want to be so immersed in its world that I can't put it down.? A distinctive voice is imperative.? I love to learn something about another time, place, or culture while engrossed in a gripping story.? Books with Jewish or other spiritual/religious themes or undercurrents are of particular interest.? I am partial to underdogs and outsiders.? Occasionally I like to read something funny, and sometimes a little magical realism is entertaining.? I don't like bodice-rippers and won't read anything with dead, maimed, or kidnapped children.? I don't read horror.? I'm not really interested in traditional SciFi, but I do like fantasy and I'm intrigued by Steampunk. I'm the wrong person for romance, thrillers, or anything but a very offbeat cozy mystery.
?For Children's Fiction - I like middle-grade and YA fiction and appreciate the same things in books for this age group as I do for adult fiction.? For middle-grade, it should be particularly character driven and quirky, with excellent pacing and rhythm.? For YA, I'm a sucker for strong girls, deep friendships, and overcoming adversity.
?For Non-fiction - I like alternative health and parenting books, cookbooks (especially, but not limited to, Gluten Free cooking), select memoirs, and the right spiritual/self-actualization book (think Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Don Miguel Ruiz).
?I am particularly committed to representing books that include, are about, or are geared toward people in the LBGTQ community, for both adult and children's literature.? (Link)
From a Blog Post (01/2012):
?You know what kind of manuscript I?d love to find?! I?d love to find an historical literary fiction set in GreenwichVillage in 1979. Or a YA Steampunky story where the Steampunkness is incidental and the story part is phenomenal. Or a very sad story about two best friends. Or a really romantic gay love story set at the turn of the last century.? Or a MG story for boys with some adventure and personal growth but no paranormal or fantastical creatures. Or a feminist retelling of a Celtic pre-Christian legend. Or a story that takes place on an island. Or a story about food. Or a road trip. Or hats.
?I have eclectic taste in literature. I don?t really know what I want to find until I find it. I like to keep my options open. I like to take chances. I like to be moved. And to think.? (Link)
What She Isn't Looking For:
Picture Books, Horror, Hard Sci-Fi, Thrillers, Mysteries (except as mentioned above), Romance, Screenplays. (Link)

Social Business: We're Just Getting Started ? Web Strategy by ...
Recently, folks suggested that social business space was getting washed out, especially with Social Media Week spreading across the globe and being hosted at many corporations. Yet despite the interesting and activity around this topic, many folks are confused around what maturity really looks like. Managing a Facebook page to promote the latest campaign isn?t really social business, it?s just social added to existing interactive marketing.
I was talking with industry peer Michael Brito (former Intel and now at Edelman) about the maturity of the space at Cisco?s social media week yesterday, and we both agree this space is just heating up. But don?t listen to us, instead, let?s review a sample from a recent Altimeter Report on Social Business of what actual corporate decision makers said in a recent survey:

Figure 1: Only the Most Advanced Companies are Conducting Social Business Holistically, Beyond Individual Silos
Figure 2: Advanced Companies are Formalizing Processes to Intake Customer Insights
Figure 3: Only the Most Advanced Companies Are Integrating Social Data into Customer Databases
Let?s take a look at this data, to understand why the social business space is still very immature:
The Industry Isn?t Mature, Few Have Reached Advanced
Altimeter?s research often segments buyers by their maturity, as it helps to forecast future behaviors and we wanted to share this today. First note this maturity breakout of these corporations (many of which are global national) that have over 1000 employees: novice are 44, intermediate 81, and advanced are 18. Percentage wise, we see that 56% of the 143 are lumped in the intermediate stages, followed by 30% of the market in novice, and followed by the remaining advanced a mere 12% of the set. What does this mean? While most companies are past the experimentation stage, they?ve yet to roll these out across the corporation or think bigger than campaigns or specific business units.Limited Integration Across Business Units, Products, and Customer Databases
Looking at Figure 1, we can see that many companies are not even integrating this across their enterprise. We know from data that rollout usually starts in Marketing (with a segment of that being corp comm), followed by customer support who has to respond to angry clients, followed by product teams, and then low adoption for partner ecosystem and supply chain. One sign of an advance company is the ability to integrate customer feedback into the product roadmap in Figure 2. We know this is a sign of maturity as it requires both vertical approval from executives and broad approval across product lines and beyond ?it?s often against the culture of many engineering groups. Lastly, in Figure 3, companies barely even have a full view of their customers in the social space, as data is siloed among brand monitoring, locked in Facebook apps, and spread among the company.Understand What Advanced Corporations Look LIke
There?s a few criteria I look for when seeing if a company is advanced beyond the three figures presented above. Nearly all employees are using social in a safe and organized way (called Holistic). Another criteria is data is being aggregated from multiple locations and the company is able to predict and anticipate what customers are going to do. Thirdly, they stop using the terms ?social business? and just use the term ?business? as this integrates into their normal digital communications. While somewhat dated (2010) I created a list of what an advanced company looks like, although I feel it needs updating in 2012.
I look forward to hearing from you, what are you seeing: Are companies starting to mature? What are your indicators?
